Building in Sketchup

My recent project to build a single storey house extension has pushed me to try something new. I am virtually building the house, with insulation, studs and all using a popular 3D modelling program called Sketchup, by Google.  I use it in conjunction with an application called LayOut, which helps you lay out the Sketchup views on a 2D print format.

Modelling takes longer than drawing sections and elevations for sure, but there are distinct advantages:

Tuition fees: what it actually means for the personal finances

Today, the coalition government passed an Act to reform university funding.  While the news are obsessed with the disarray among the Liberal Democrats, I would urge people to look at the darker, wider picture of the widening generation divide.  I think it time that young people face the fact that this reform is popular, even if you hate it.  If anything, what happened today was a success for democracy - the majority won.  The older generation expect you to pay for what they got for free.

Wikileaks and the new authority

It's a big week for the internet and the old powers.  I am fascinated by the Wikileaks story, not so much for the revelations themselves, but the reactions of some governments and columnists.  Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks have been likened to a terrorist by Sarah Palin, calls for his killing by William Kristol, former chief of staff to the US vice president, and further calls for death by conservative columnist Jeffrey T Kuhner in the Washington Times.  Some of these threats are listed in the Open Letter to the Australian Prime Minister regarding Julian Assange.

A very old house

Timber structure bedroom

In the heart of the village of Great Missenden, is a very old house. The original detached building is of timber construction from the 16th century. After many alterations and the rise of neighbouring houses over the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, it is now a grade II listed, terraced home. This house was to be my first major project;

Sketchup Resources

Sketchup is a great application. One of the great things about it is the ability to share bits and pieces with a whole community of users. I have a list of things SketchUp and LayOut users might find useful. All released under a Creative Commons License (free to share). If you would like me to add your work, feel free to email it to me, and I will add them to this list. Whole of Government Accounts

What seems to have attracted very little attention these days is the plan by the UK government to open up its accounts to the public. The project is named Whole of Government Accounts (WGA) and the first year of accounts will be published for the year 2009-10. It is a welcome move for those who yearn for a more open government, and those that accuse the bureaucracies of massive waste.

With whom is your identity safe?

ID card Timeline

This is a slightly unrelated topic to architecture, but it's one of those things that I feel very strongly about, and something that you can help with, just by knowing about it. I am sure that you've heard about the National ID Card scheme and the National Identity Register (NIR), with its claims to:

Environmental analysis and integrated working

"Collaboration" is the big word in architecture today. Yet I'm not sure how much of it actually happens. Architects outsource to engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors and environmental scientists, to name a few professions, but I'm not sure how much of it you can call collaborating. Traditionally these professions have defined boundaries of responsibility; boundaries that are rarely crossed by an outsider.

Internet Communications - IM and video conferencing

Communication over the internet is now quite advanced. You can call people free of charge through your computer, have video conferencing with more than one person, and take over each other’s computer screens from a distance. This is not particularly new; instant messaging (IM) has been available for free for some time, and have had a slow adoption, possibly due to inferior internet speeds.

Connect to an office network with VPN - Mac OS X

There is advice on this subject for Windows users here. Right, so you are an employee of a small practice, and you want to connect to the office network. Before you begin, you should know:
